The cancellation follows backlash from the ETSU chapter of Turning Point USA and Republican officials in Tennessee. Dyer's family, who endowed a scholarship for politically engaged art students, expressed feelings of betrayal, with the university stating its goals "no longer coincided" with theirs but refusing to provide written explanation.
