The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) in Richmond has repatriated 41 terracotta relief fragments valued at approximately $400,000 to Turkey. The works, acquired by the museum in the 1970s from Summa Galleries and antiquities dealer Harlan J. Berk, were determined to have been illegally excavated from a 6th-century B.C.E. Phrygian temple. The repatriation followed an investigation by the Antiquities Trafficking Unit of the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, which presented evidence of illicit excavation and illegal export to the museum.

Five of seven valuable 18th-century snuffboxes stolen from Paris’s Cognacq-Jay Museum in November 2024 have been recovered. Paris Musées announced the return, crediting a police investigation with assistance from the Paris Criminal Investigation Department. The boxes were taken by masked thieves during a daylight robbery from the exhibition “Pocket Luxury.” Two of the recovered boxes were on loan from the Louvre, two from the British royal family’s Royal Collection Trust, and one from the Victoria and Albert Museum. Two more boxes, one from the V&A and one from the Royal Collection, remain missing. The stolen items, decorated with gold, precious stones, mother-of-pearl, or enamel, are estimated to be worth at least €1 million ($1.16 million).

A French nonprofit, For Ukraine, For Their Freedom and Ours!, has filed a complaint with the International Criminal Court (ICC) accusing Russia of the systematic and organized looting of Ukrainian cultural heritage since the 2022 invasion. The complaint, submitted on July 11, calls for arrest warrants for Vladimir Putin and eight senior Russian officials, alleging that the plunder was planned at the highest state level and constitutes war crimes under international law. The group identified a modus operandi involving Russia's Ministry of Culture, museum directors, and intelligence chief Sergei Naryshkin.
