Westman Youth for Christ (YFC) is calling for more artists to participate in its 4th Annual Art Show & Sale, scheduled for June 18th and 19th at the Ukrainian National Hall in Brandon, Manitoba. The Taylor County Arts Council has announced the winners of its 28th Annual Thea Porter Memorial Day Juried Art Exhibit, now on display at Gallery 62 West in Grafton, West Virginia, through June 2. Top honors in the adult division went to Kristen Colebank for her watercolor "First Light," with Charlie Cowger and others also receiving awards; in the youth division, Katherine DeMos took first place for "Rad Grandad." A call for artists has been issued for a commemorative exhibition celebrating Laredo's 271st anniversary. The Mexican Cultural Institute in Laredo, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Mexico, the Webb County Heritage Foundation, and the city of Laredo, invites local and regional artists to submit original artwork reflecting the city's identity. Submissions will be accepted May 4-8 at the Consulate General of Mexico, with selected works displayed May 15 through June 5 at the Mexican Cultural Institute. The exhibit will focus on five themes: history, culture, people, landscapes, and heritage.
The New Hampshire Art Association (NHAA) is presenting the Sue Werner Thoresen Juried Exhibition at its Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery in Portsmouth, opening May 1, 2026. The show features 73 artists whose works explore the experiences of women, girls, and gender-diverse people, inspired by the New Hampshire Women’s Foundation’s Status of Women in New Hampshire report. A talented artist has demonstrated an extraordinary technique by drawing an intricate Jiangnan water town scene using both hands simultaneously. The performance was captured and shared by the People's Daily App, with production credits to Zhu Yurou and intern Zhang Jingxuan, and web editing by Zhang Kaiwei and Hongyu.
The 47th Westman Juried Art Show took place at the Killarney United Church's CE Center in Manitoba, showcasing 120 pieces of flat art by 87 local artists from 23 communities. Two Black men, Pedro Rajão and Fernando Sawaya, created the NegroMuro (BlackWall) mural project in Rio de Janeiro in 2018 to address the severe underrepresentation of Black figures in the city's public monuments. Of Rio's roughly 360 statues and busts, fewer than 10% depict Black people. The project now comprises 80 murals across the city, portraying about 120 Black individuals—including writer Machado de Assis, activist Lélia Gonzalez, and musician Luiz Melodia—on walls of schools, museums, train stations, and private homes. The murals are concentrated in the less touristy north zone, deliberately focusing on underserved neighborhoods. The project was recently recognized by law as part of Rio's intangible cultural heritage.
