The Morris Arboretum & Gardens in Philadelphia recently displayed supersized red poppies at its entrance, reproductions of the colossal sculptures "Papaver Rubrum Giganteum" created by the late artist Gary G. Miller. Originally installed at the arboretum in May 2008, the installation featured 300 handmade aluminum poppies with 20-inch flower heads on 10-foot stems. Miller, a sculpture and photography teacher at Germantown Friends School and a facilitator at Woodmere Art Museum, was killed by a drunk driver in 2013. To commemorate his work, the Chestnut Hill Community Association organized an exhibition titled "Papaver Rubrum Giganteum Redux," featuring photographs of the poppies in a pop-up space from September 27 to October 4.

Blue Fern Artists Collective Gallery will hold its grand opening and ribbon-cutting on Friday, Sept. 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. at 40B Main St. in Peterborough, N.H., in a space formerly occupied by Grey Horse Candles. The gallery, founded by Deborah Caplan and a group of local artists, had a soft opening during the Aug. 8 Night Market. It features 18 artists working in diverse media including paintings, drawings, collage, multimedia, ceramics, felting, jewelry, leather work, and photography. The collective is collaboratively owned and run, with each artist paying a nonrefundable buy-in and monthly dues, and working two shifts per month. Artists receive 82% of sales profits, far above the typical 40-50% gallery commission. The gallery is also partnering with MAXT Makerspace to showcase makers’ work and plans to host classes, art history lectures, poetry readings, and evening events in the adjacent alley.
The Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts (LHUCA) in Lubbock, Texas, has launched an open call for exhibition proposals for its 2026 season. Spokane artist Michael Dinning and his wife Stephanie opened D2 Gallery and Studio on May 2 in downtown Spokane, located at the corner of West First Avenue and South Bernard Street. Japanese ceramicist Kunimasa Aoki has won the €50,000 Loewe Foundation Craft Prize 2025 for his terracotta work *Realm of Living Things 19*, which the jury praised for its risk-taking firing process. The piece, made from thin coils of clay stacked and compressed, was fired in an electric kiln until it began to smoke, then finished with soil, glue, and pencil marks. On Friday, the Ukrainian Art Festival (UKUfest), Estonia's first festival dedicated to contemporary Ukrainian art, launched with new exhibitions opening simultaneously at five galleries across Tallinn: Fotografiska Tallinn, Juhan Kuus Documentary Photo Center, Temnikova & Kasela Gallery, Truus Gallery, and ArtDepoo Gallery. The exhibitions feature works by nine Ukrainian artists—Tania Ruda, Taras Bychko, Vira Minailova, Maya Kolesnik, Pavlo Mazai, Viktoria Berezina, Anton Hudo, Roman Minin, and Andrii Palval—many created specifically for the festival. The nonprofit IndigenousAF, founded by artist Fawn Douglas and UNLV professor A.B. Wilkinson, announced plans to open a Native-owned retail store and gallery in Downtown Las Vegas Arts District. The venue will feature 700 square feet of retail space, 1,600 square feet of gallery space, and 1,500 square feet of mixed-use space, located near Charleston Boulevard and 3rd Street. Arizona State University's Barrett, The Honors College is partnering with Phoenix Art Museum to host a one-day symposium titled "MARS: Revisited" on September 20, 2025, at the museum. The event revisits the legacy of El Movimiento Artístico del Río Salado (MARS), a Chicano arts collective founded in the late 1970s that provided a platform for Mexican American artists excluded from major Arizona museums and galleries. MARS operated for over two decades, helping launch the First Fridays on Roosevelt Row arts event and shaping Phoenix's cultural identity before closing in the early 2000s. The symposium, co-organized by professor Mathew Sandoval and curator Christian Ramírez, will feature archival research and oral histories conducted by Barrett students, with a major MARS exhibition and scholarly monograph planned for 2028.
Vandals broke into The Market Gallery, a new art space set to open in a former Wilko store in South Shields, UK, days before its launch. Artists Laura Robertson and Theodore Godfrey-Cass discovered the gallery had been graffitied, studio booths damaged, and artwork urinated on, smashed, or stolen. Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery will reopen its history galleries to the public on Friday, May 2, 2025, after a five-year closure that began during the pandemic.
