The Ford Foundation has appointed Heather Gerken, dean of Yale Law School, as its next president. Gerken will officially assume the role on November 1, following a national search launched after Walker announced his departure after 12 years.
Takako Yamaguchi, a 72-year-old Japanese-born artist based in Los Angeles, is experiencing a career resurgence with a new series of seascapes featured in a 2023 show at Ortuzar and the 2024 Whitney Biennial. She is set to receive her first solo museum exhibition in Los Angeles at MOCA's Grand Avenue space starting June 29, where she will present 10 new works. In an interview with CULTURED, Yamaguchi discusses her ambivalent relationship with the sea, her process of drawing inspiration from other artists' seascapes rather than nature itself, and her identity as an outsider who has lived most of her life in the U.S. while retaining Japanese citizenship.
Shalini Le Gall, deputy director for curatorial affairs at the Portland Museum of Art in Maine, has been named director of the Ackland Art Museum at UNC-Chapel Hill. She will begin her new role on September 8, 2025, bringing over 20 years of experience in museums and higher education, including expertise in exhibit curation, acquisitions, strategic planning, and community engagement. Le Gall succeeds a period of growth at the Portland Museum of Art, where she oversaw more than $10 million in acquisitions and coordinated traveling exhibitions across the U.S.
Artforum announced the departure of editor-in-chief Tina Rivers Ryan at the end of February. She will be replaced by executive editor Rachel Wetzler and editor Daniel Wenger, who will serve as co-editors, with the editor-in-chief title being retired.
The Ashley Gibson Barnett Museum of Art at Florida Southern College has appointed Laura V. Putnam as its new Curator of Exhibitions. Putnam, who has worked at the museum since 2013 and most recently served as Manager of Exhibitions and Adult Programs, steps into the role following the departure of former Executive Director and Chief Curator Dr. Alex Rich. She will lead the conceptualization, development, and execution of all exhibitions, including original research, artwork selection, and collaboration with artists and partner institutions.
Phillips has appointed India Phillips as Managing Director, Modern & Contemporary Art, Europe, effective February 2026. Based in London and reporting directly to the CEO, she will focus on expanding the auction house's presence across Europe. Phillips joins after a decade at Bonhams, where she most recently served as Managing Director, EMEA. The announcement also includes promotions for Marianne Hoet to Chairman, Modern and Contemporary Art Europe, Olivia Thornton to Deputy Chairwoman, and Matt Langton to Deputy Chairman, Modern and Contemporary Art, Europe.
Hedwig Fijen, the founding director of Manifesta, the nomadic European biennial launched in 1996, has announced she will depart on October 5. Fijen began working on the platform in 1991 under a commission from the Netherlands Office for Fine Arts, and oversaw editions in cities including Rotterdam, Palermo, Pristina, and Barcelona. The supervisory board has appointed Emilia van Lynden as general director and Catherine Nichols as artistic director to lead future editions, starting with Manifesta 16 in Germany’s Ruhr Valley this year and Manifesta 17 in Coimbra, Portugal, in 2028.
Hyeree Ro is preparing for the 2026 Venice Biennale, where she will present the work "Bearing (2026)" as part of the Korean Pavilion, titled "Liberation Space: Fortress/Nest." The article follows Ro in her temporary Brooklyn studio, where she works with salvaged objects and materials that migrate across multiple works over years—such as a sheet of organza purchased in 2023 that later appeared in "Niro (2024)" and "Carry (2025)" before being repurposed as the pavilion's fabric walls. Her practice is defined by a nomadic, accumulative material logic: objects enter without a fixed destination and gain meaning through repeated reuse.
The South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC) has named Farida Sherif, a senior at Verona High School, as the recipient of its 2026 Paul Bartick Emerging Artist Award. Sherif was selected by an award committee for the strength, individuality, and compelling voice of her work, which she developed through SOPAC's Inspired Minds Young Artist Exhibition program. She will receive the award at a gallery opening reception on May 14, 2026.
Ohio-based artist Rachel Mentzer creates collagraph prints using discarded cartons as printing plates, carving them with images of birds, trees, and energy infrastructure. Her process involves carving the cardboard, sealing it with polyurethane, inking it, and transferring the image via an etching press, often incorporating chine collé for color. Her work was recently shown at the Manhattan Graphics Center, and she will participate in the Suzanne Wilson Artist-in-Residence Program at Glen Arbor Arts Center this summer.
