Asian Art Museum’s exhibit finds hope and beauty in ‘Everyday War’

The Asian Art Museum in San Francisco is presenting "Everyday War," the first North American solo exhibition of Taiwanese artist Yuan Goang-Ming, on view through August 4. Taiwanese Video Artist, Asian Art Museum Curator Collaborate

Taiwanese video artist Yuan Goang-Ming has brought his exhibition "Everyday War" to San Francisco's Asian Art Museum, where it will be on view through August 4. The show, which explores the anxiety of daily life under the constant threat of invasion by China, was originally presented at Taiwan's pavilion during the 60th Venice Biennale in 2024. It was curated for the Biennale by Abby Chen, the contemporary curator at the Asian Art Museum, who then arranged for the exhibition to travel to San Francisco. The exhibition features video installations such as "Dwelling," "Everyday War," "Everyday Maneuver," and "Prophecy," all of which capture a sense of dread and unease in domestic and public spaces.

Art exhibit honors Maine’s Deaf community, victims of Lewiston shootings - Portland Press Herald

An exhibition titled “Unspoken Resilience: Healing from the Lewiston Shooting Two Years In” is on view at the University of New England Art Gallery in Portland, Maine. Co-curated by Michelle Ames and Meryl Troop, the show features work by deaf artists and craftspeople alongside color photographs of Lewiston by Michael Kolster. It was created in response to the October 2023 mass shooting at Schemengees Bar & Grille in Lewiston, which killed 18 people, four of whom were deaf. Ames, co-director of deaf services at Disability Rights Maine, was frustrated by the lack of ASL interpreters in media coverage and helped organize community support. The exhibition includes pieces that explore Deaf culture, healing, and the concept of De’VIA (Deaf View/Image Art), a term defined in 1989 by deaf artists to express the Deaf experience through high contrast, intense colors, and symbolic imagery.

Spotlight: Mollie Jackson’s Catharsis at NoBo Art Center

Abstract artist Mollie Jackson is the subject of a commissioned display titled "Catharsis" at the NoBo Art Center, running through May 23. The exhibition features large-scale, expressive abstract paintings that Jackson describes as immersive and emotionally cathartic. A special workshop, "Making Emotions Visible," will be held on May 16 in conjunction with the show. Jackson, who will also be the summer 2026 artist-in-residence at the Firehouse Art Center, discusses her process-oriented approach, her background as the daughter of an abstract painter, and her belief that abstract art connects viewers to emotion rather than representation.
