A major retrospective of Hawai‘i-born ceramic artist Toshiko Takaezu opens at the Honolulu Museum of Art on February 14, 2026. Hui Noʻeau Visual Arts Center on Maui is presenting its Annual Juried Exhibition from January 16 to February 20, 2026. The open-theme show features works in ceramics, printmaking, sculpture, photography, painting, digital media, jewelry, Hawaiian cultural arts, wood, fiber, and more, juried by Denise Karabinus, Executive Director of Honolulu Printmakers. The exhibition opens with a juror walkthrough and reception on January 16, and artists from Maui and beyond were invited to submit work created within the past two years.
The Maui Arts & Cultural Center will present "Satoru Abe: Reaching for the Sun," a retrospective exhibition showcasing over seven decades of work by the late Hawaiʻi-based artist Satoru Abe (1926–2025). Running from September 16 to November 22, 2025, at the Schaefer International Gallery, the show features more than 70 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper drawn from the Honolulu Museum of Art’s permanent collection and private lenders. Co-curated by HoMA curators Katherine Love and Alejandra Rojas Silva, the exhibition traces Abe’s evolution from figurative works in the 1950s through abstract explorations of natural forms, marking his first solo exhibition on Maui.
A new exhibition at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s Walter Dods, Jr. RISE Center honors the Metcalf Château, a pioneering collective of Asian-American artists who gathered in a house on Metcalf Street in the 1950s to redefine modern art in Hawaiʻi. Curated by Allison Wong and initiated by longtime university supporter Walter Dods, the show features works by founding members Bumpei Akaji, Satoru Abe, Tadashi Sato, Edmund Chung, Tetsuo “Bob” Ochikubo, Jerry T. Okimoto, and James K.K. Park, with a ceremonial blessing by Kahu Kordell Kekoa.
