Walk through UAE’s first contemporary art exhibition dedicated to the Urdu language

The Ishara Art Foundation in the UAE has launched 'Urdu Worlds,' the region's first contemporary art exhibition dedicated to the Urdu language. Curated by Hammad Nasar, the show features a visual dialogue between the late Indian-born artist Zarina and Pakistani multimedia artist Ali Kazim. The exhibition showcases Zarina’s delicate woodcut prints, including her seminal 'Home is a Foreign Place,' alongside an expansive survey of Kazim’s paintings, sculptures, and his new 'Alphabets' series, marking his institutional debut in West Asia.

Beyond the white walls

The creative initiative Roadside, founded by artist Ali Arshad, is challenging the traditional gallery model in Pakistan by hosting pop-up exhibitions in unconventional public spaces. Their latest show, "Anighst Preeminent Prosaics," transformed Iqbal House, a pre-partition bungalow in Lahore, into a multi-sensory art experience featuring 14 artists. By placing works in sites ranging from barber shops to parking lots, the initiative seeks to dismantle the elitist barriers of the "white cube" and engage a broader demographic, including the working class and Gen Z.

‘Beaming smiles’: Karachi art exhibit puts artists with Down syndrome on path to empowerment

The Arts Council of Pakistan in Karachi recently hosted the fourth edition of 'Rangon Ki Lehr,' an exhibition showcasing over 90 paintings by 80 artists with Down syndrome. Organized by the Karachi Down Syndrome Program (KDSP), the event featured works created by students in the 'Education for Life' program, drawing participants from Karachi, Islamabad, and Faisalabad. The exhibition serves as a professional platform where artists take full creative control of their canvases, choosing their own techniques, colors, and subjects.
