INTERSTATE art exhibition set to open this week

Central Washington University's Sara Spurgeon Gallery is hosting a national juried exhibition titled “INTERSTATE: Where I-90 meets I-82,” opening November 6 in Ellensburg. Juror Alexis L. Silvia, Curatorial Assistant at the Frye Art Museum in Seattle, selected works by 46 artists from across the United States, including Brandin Barón, Neil Berkowitz, Shivani Bhalla, and others. The exhibition runs through December 6, with an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. following a 4 p.m. presentation.

AMAB – Assisi Mostra Arte Antiquariato Bastia Umbra, the antique fair founded in Assisi in 1973 and moved to the Umbria Fiere exhibition center in 1989, celebrated its 50th edition in 2025 and will reopen from April 24 to May 3, 2026. The 10-day event features 90 exhibitors and includes special exhibitions marking the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi (at Palazzo Collicola in Spoleto and the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria in Perugia) and the centenary of the birth of artist Giorgio Ascani, known as Nuvolo, curated by Bruno Corà, as well as a project on costume designer Tita Tegano with costumes from the Renato Bruson collection. Director Emo Antinori Petrini, son of founder Mario, discusses the fair's evolution, its commitment to quality, and its new focus on contemporary art installations and performances.

Healing through art : Stories of First Nations people who have experienced incarceration

The Torch, a First Peoples-led arts organization in Victoria, Australia, runs a program supporting Indigenous artists who have experienced incarceration. Its annual exhibition, Confined 17, features nearly 500 artworks by 424 First Nations artists at the Glen Eira City Council gallery in Naarm. The organization provides art materials, cultural connection, and economic support, with artists receiving 100% of their income from sales. Participants like Tegan, a Palawa woman, describe improvising with food dye in prison to create watercolor-style works, while CEO Susannah Day and founder Kent Morris emphasize the program's role in reducing reincarceration rates.

Artists open their doors to the public at Gowanus Open Studios, Oct. 18-19

Gowanus Open Studios returns on October 18-19, inviting the public into the studios of hundreds of local artists across dozens of locations in Brooklyn. The event, organized by Arts Gowanus, features individual studio visits, group shows, and two featured exhibitions: "Add/Subtract" curated by Tegan Brozyna, and a retrospective of the late Samuel Heller. Highlights include the first affordable artist studios secured through the 2021 Gowanus rezoning, with about 22 new subsidized spaces opening at The Shop BK and Society Brooklyn, where artists like Mayowa Nwadike now work after winning a lottery for affordable space.
