Tasmania's Dark Mofo festival for 2026 will feature an exclusive, single-viewer experimental film titled 'Sculpt: Eye of the Duck,' starring Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Rampling. Created by French artist Loris Gréaud, the 50-minute film will be shown to only 90 individuals at a secret, remote location outside Hobart, with viewers transported to the site after securing one of nine daily slots.
Agosto Machado, a seminal performer, archivist, and fixture of New York’s downtown queer arts scene, has passed away. Known as a "keeper of secrets" and a vital connector within the avant-garde community, Machado was a muse to filmmaker Jack Smith and a lifelong friend to Warhol superstar Mario Montez. His life spanned the height of the East Village performance era, where he transitioned from a quiet observer to an essential participant in the preservation of underground history.
The Colectivo Los Ingrávidos, an anonymous film collective based in Tehuacán, Mexico, has been named the winner of the 2026 Schering Stiftung Award for Artistic Research. The group will receive a €15,000 prize, a solo exhibition at Berlin's KW Institute of Contemporary Art featuring a newly produced work, and a publication.
Two new exhibitions will open at the Brno House of Arts on Tuesday, 28 April, with a public vernissage at 6pm. The first, 'Distorted Image: Chapters from the Beginnings of Video Art', is an international show examining how artists in Czechoslovakia, Poland, and Hungary from the 1960s to the 1990s manipulated analogue and digital images to question truth in media, featuring experimental films, early animations, and independent video magazines. The second, 'Words of Dalibor Chatrný', is a retrospective marking the centenary of the Czech artist's birth, focusing on his 'word works' that explore language and the interplay between reading and seeing, while retaining painterly qualities.
Peggy Ahwesh's solo exhibition "The Wayfinders," recently on view at New York's Microscope Gallery, marks a new direction for the experimental filmmaker. For the first time, she incorporates footage from an early-2000s flight simulator alongside original video and animation to create a large-scale installation. The work serves as an elegy for the abandoned Qalandia/Atarot airport, situated between Qalandia and Jerusalem, which operated as a civilian airport from 1948 to 1967 before Israel annexed the site. Through poetic voiceover and imagery of travel and navigation, Ahwesh reflects on Palestine's thwarted right to the sky, the history of wayfinding by the stars, and the porous borders of the past contrasted with today's restrictions.
