Thiago de Paula Souza Appointed Curator of Eighth Athens Biennale

Thiago de Paula Souza, a Brazilian-born curator and educator, has been appointed curator of the Eighth Athens Biennale, scheduled for spring 2026. De Paula Souza, based in São Paulo and a member of the artistic committee of NESR Art Foundation in Angola, is recognized for focusing on artistic practices involving transmutation through eroticism, gender nonconformity, and intimacy. He previously cocurated the 2025 Bienal de São Paulo, the 2024 Panorama da Arte Brasileira at MAM São Paulo, and the survey “Some May Work as Symbols: Art Made in Brazil, 1950s–70s” at Raven Row, London, and served on the curatorial team of the 2018 Berlin Biennale.

The nonconformist: Ben Shahn is honoured in a ‘homecoming’ show at New York's Jewish Museum

A major retrospective titled "Ben Shahn, On Nonconformity" opens this month at New York's Jewish Museum, honoring the American artist's lifelong activism. The exhibition includes 175 artworks and objects from the 1930s to the 1960s, organized into sections covering Shahn's Social Realism, New Deal-era work, responses to McCarthyism and the Atomic Age, and support for the civil rights movement. Co-curated by Laura Katzman and Stephen Brown, the show is adapted from a 2023 retrospective at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, which was a surprise hit.

Contemporary Fine Arts in Berlin is presenting 'Had a Farm', a solo exhibition by New Zealand-born artist Travis MacDonald, opening during Gallery Weekend Berlin 2026. The show features new paintings that explore countercultural aesthetics through long-haired, androgynous figures set in a rural-subcultural landscape, drawing on photographic archives of 1970s experimental communes and referencing Pier Paolo Pasolini's essay on hair as a political sign.

'Rhino World Order' to open Tyler Art Gallery season

SUNY Oswego's Tyler Art Gallery opens its fall season with 'Rhino World Order,' an exhibition of large-scale ceramic and plaster sculptures by Buffalo-based artist Richard Tomasello. The show runs from September 2 to October 8, with an opening reception on September 5. Tomasello's work draws inspiration from Eugène Ionesco's 1959 absurdist play 'Rhinoceros,' using the rhinoceros as a metaphor for fascism and conformity. His sculptures address themes of physical assault, school shootings, mob mentality, toxic masculinity, and systemic violence, emphasizing the power of individual resistance. Related events include a panel discussion with the artist and gallery director Davana Robedee, and a student reading of the play.
