Virginia Museum of Fine Arts gifted collection of nearly 2,000 photographs

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) has received a major gift of 1,986 photographs from Joy of Giving Something Inc (JGS), a nonprofit founded by Howard and Janet Stein. The donation includes works by over 450 artists, spanning the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, with highlights from photographers such as Charles Marville, Eugène Atget, Nadar, Alfred Stieglitz, Dora Maar, and Dorothea Lange. The collection, largely assembled by financier Howard Stein, also features rare daguerreotypes, vernacular photographs, and contemporary works. A previous transfer in 2023 included portfolios by Paul Strand and Larry Clark, and the JGS board has now elected to donate the vast majority of its remaining holdings to the museum.

Authorities in New York return more than 650 looted antiquities, valued at nearly $14m, to India

The Manhattan District Attorney's office, led by Alvin Bragg, returned 657 looted antiquities valued at nearly $14 million to Indian authorities in late March 2025. The pieces, recovered through investigations into criminal trafficking networks, include a $2 million bronze Avalokiteshvara stolen from a museum in Raipur, a $7.5 million red sandstone Buddha smuggled by convicted trafficker Subhash Kapoor, and a sandstone dancing Ganesha looted from a Madhya Pradesh temple that passed through dealer Doris Wiener and was sold at Christie's in 2012.

US National Gallery of Art receives $116m gift to continue nationwide lending programme

The National Gallery of Art (NGA) in Washington, DC, has received a landmark $116 million donation from the Mitchell P. Rales Family Foundation to permanently endow its Across the Nation lending programme. Launched in spring 2025, the initiative has already reached around 900,000 visitors at ten partner institutions, including the Anchorage Museum and the Mint Museum, by loaning works from the NGA's collection at no cost—covering transport, installation, insurance, and marketing. The next cycle will run from autumn 2027 to 2029, with new partners to be announced.

New Jersey Father and Daughter Plead Guilty to $2 M. Counterfeit Art Scheme

Two New Jersey residents, Erwin Bankowski and his daughter Karolina Bankowska, pleaded guilty to running a counterfeit art scheme that funneled over 200 fake works into the legitimate market between 2020 and 2025. The pair consigned forgeries attributed to artists including Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, Banksy, and Luiseño artist Fritz Scholder to galleries and auction houses across the United States, defrauding buyers of at least $2 million. They fabricated ownership histories, forged gallery stamps and certificates of authenticity using antique books and aged paper, and now face up to 20 years in prison plus restitution.
