Hilde Lynn Helphenstein, Who Memed the Art World as Jerry Gogosian, Is Dead
Hilde Lynn Helphenstein, the artist and writer known as the anonymous Instagram satirist Jerry Gogosian, has died at age 40. She was found dead in her room at the Rosewood São Paulo hotel in Brazil on Sunday, May 31, with an empty vodka bottle and unidentified pills present. Helphenstein launched the Jerry Gogosian account in 2018, using memes to skewer art-world nepotism, art flipping, and market absurdities. The account, whose name combines critic Jerry Saltz and dealer Larry Gagosian, grew to over 150,000 followers. In 2020, writer Kenny Schachter revealed Helphenstein as the creator, and she confirmed the account was a conceptual artwork born during a yearlong illness. She also ran the now-defunct Los Angeles gallery Hilde, organized a group show at Sotheby's, and gained Hollywood representation from United Talent Agency.
