An opera and an art exhibition in New York focus on Mexican artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera

The Metropolitan Opera in New York City premiered 'El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego (The Last Dream of Frida and Diego)', an opera about Mexican artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, composed by Gabriela Lena Frank with a libretto by Nilo Cruz. The production, directed by Deborah Colker with set design by Jon Bausor, debuted in San Diego in 2022 and has since been staged in San Francisco and Chicago. 61st Venice Biennale: Cultural workers and artists strike and protest against the Israeli genocide in Gaza

Faculty, students oppose censorship of artist at University of North Texas

The show, titled “Ni de Aqui, Ni de Allá,” was displayed at the College of Visual Art & Design (CVAD) Gallery and featured works from Quiñonez’s I.C.E. Scream series, including large-scale paleta sculptures embedded with handcuffs and firearms, and a cart bearing the phrase “U.S. Department of Stolen Land Security.” The exhibition was closed without notice, its street-facing windows covered with brown paper, and UNT terminated its loan agreement with Boston University Art Galleries, which had originally hosted the show in September 2025. Faculty and students responded with an open letter to UNT President Harrison Keller, condemning the censorship and demanding transparency.

Pepperdine Closes Exhibit Featuring “Overtly Political” Art

Pepperdine University in Malibu, California, closed the exhibition “Hold My Hand In Yours” at the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art on October 6, after artists discovered their works had been removed or altered for being “overtly political.” The show, curated by museum director Andrea Gyorody, explored the imagery of hands in relation to labor and care. One artist found her video turned off at the university’s request, and a sculpture was modified to hide text reading “Save the Children” and “Abolish ICE.” The affected artists requested their pieces be removed, and others withdrew in solidarity. Australian Aboriginal artist Emily Kame Kngwarreye exhibition at Tate Modern

The Tate Modern in London is hosting a landmark retrospective of Australian Aboriginal artist Emily Kame Kngwarreye (c. 1914–1996), running from July 10 to January 11, 2026.
