Marianna Simnett has opened a new multimedia exhibition titled "Circus" at the Secession in Vienna. The show features a combination of light, sound, and sculptural works that delve into her Yugoslav heritage, weaving together personal family history with folklore.
The exhibition is significant for its exploration of complex cultural identity and traumatic history through a contemporary, multi-sensory lens. Simnett's work, particularly a piece inspired by her Jewish-Croatian grandfather's Holocaust experience, engages with themes of memory, myth, and the ambiguous figures of Balkan folklore, positioning personal narrative within broader historical and cultural frameworks.
