Charity Art UK has completed a major digitisation project, recording nearly 7,000 murals and street artworks across the UK. The Murals Digitisation and Engagement Programme, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, created an online database of over 21,000 public artworks, capturing everything from medieval church paintings to contemporary 2025 murals, with the help of a network of 90 volunteers.
This project creates an unprecedented public record of a highly accessible art form, highlighting its diversity and role in reflecting community identity, heritage, and social issues. It arrives as mural-making is increasingly commissioned for urban revitalization, and the archive will be expanded through 2026 with educational resources, preserving and promoting this democratic aspect of British cultural life.
