museums association code of ethics fossil fuel sponsorships 1234750996

The Museums Association (MA) in the United Kingdom has proposed a new code of ethics that, for the first time, explicitly mentions fossil fuel companies. The guidelines recommend that museums transition away from sponsorship by organizations involved in environmental harm, human rights abuses, or other activities misaligned with museum values, and instead seek ethical funding that serves community interests. MA members will vote on ratifying the changes from September 15 until the annual conference on October 7, with the last code updated in 2015.

This matters because it marks a significant shift in institutional policy amid growing public concern over climate change—77% of Britons are concerned, according to an Ipsos poll. While major institutions like Tate, the National Portrait Gallery, and the Royal Shakespeare Company have already ended fossil fuel sponsorships, others such as the Science Museum and the British Museum continue to accept funding from companies like BP and Adani Green Energy. If adopted, the new code could set a powerful precedent internationally, pressuring more museums to sever ties with fossil fuel sponsors and align their funding with climate goals.
