Nova Contemporary gallery taps into Thailand’s burgeoning market

Nova Contemporary, an influential Thai gallery, is expanding with a new 412 sq. m space in Bangkok's Bang Rak neighborhood, opening with the group exhibition 'Affinities' (26 April to 5 July) featuring 28 mostly Thai contemporary artists, organized in cooperation with Bangkok CityCity Gallery. Founder Sutima Sucharitakul notes the Thai art market is gradually expanding, with growth in local collectors and international interest despite broader market caution, and describes a cross-generational pool of collectors becoming more receptive to diverse regional and medium-specific works.

This expansion matters because it signals the maturation of Thailand's contemporary art scene, which has historically seen slow local collector engagement with contemporary art. Nova Contemporary's move to a youthful area near a university and public transport, alongside its collaboration with Bangkok CityCity Gallery, highlights a collaborative ecosystem that has fostered regional prominence for Thai and Southeast Asian artists. The gallery's program also engages with Thailand's politically complex context, including military-backed governance and repression of protests, maintaining an anthropological perspective on upheaval through its artists' work.
