Guests Of Honor: Art Of Faith From The Jewish Museum, New York – At The Detroit Institute Of Arts

The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) has opened "Guests of Honor: Art of Faith from the Jewish Museum, New York," a display of 13 masterworks of ceremonial Judaica on loan from the Jewish Museum in New York. Rather than grouping the objects separately, the DIA has interspersed them among its permanent collection across five galleries, placing Torah adornments alongside Islamic Qurans and Christian religious art to draw connections between faith traditions. The exhibition, curated by Alan Darr and Katherine Kasdorf, runs through January 3 and includes objects dating from the 1400s to the 1800s.

This exhibition matters because it addresses rising antisemitism and a divisive geopolitical climate by fostering interfaith understanding through art. By integrating Judaica into the DIA's encyclopedic collection, the museum encourages visitors to see shared themes of sacredness, craftsmanship, and cultural exchange across Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The partnership between the DIA and the Jewish Museum also highlights the role of cultural institutions in preserving and sharing Jewish history, filling a gap in the DIA's own collection of Judaica while strengthening community bonds.
