Cover | DIA Welcomes Jewish Museum Treasures in ‘Guests of Honor' Exhibit

The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) has launched a long-term exhibition titled 'Guests of Honor,' featuring significant loans of Jewish ceremonial objects from the Jewish Museum in New York. Running through January 2027, the display includes intricate items such as Torah crowns, pointers, menorahs, and spice boxes sourced from Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. The objects are integrated into various galleries, including the Arts of the Islamic World section, to highlight shared aesthetic motifs and historical connections between different cultures.

This collaboration marks a significant shift for the DIA, which does not have its own permanent collection of Judaica, allowing the museum to represent Jewish history and spiritual life for the first time. The initiative is part of the Jewish Museum’s 'integrated resonance' program, directed by James Snyder, which aims to weave Jewish cultural narratives into the broader global art history presented at major museums across the United States. By placing these objects in conversation with secular and religious works from other traditions, the exhibition fosters cross-cultural understanding and addresses a growing demand for inclusive storytelling in public institutions.
