The Glendale Unified School District and Glendale Arts have partnered for the third annual GUSD Senior Show, on display at ace/121 Gallery through June 13. The exhibition features works by 30 graduating students from all five GUSD high schools, including paintings, sculptures, photography, ceramics, and mixed-media pieces. During the opening reception, Glendale Arts announced the inaugural Student Artist Scholarship, awarding $500 each to seniors Alena Kim and Matilda King. Kim, a Korean American student from Crescenta Valley High School, submitted two paintings exploring identity and stereotypes, while King, from Herbert Hoover High School, displayed a ceramic sculpture titled "Dragon Vase."
This exhibition matters because it provides a professional gallery platform for emerging young artists, offering them visibility and validation at a pivotal point in their creative journeys. The new scholarship program underscores a commitment to investing in local talent, especially for students like Kim who lack access to formal art classes. By showcasing diverse perspectives on identity and belonging, the show highlights the role of arts education in fostering self-expression and community connection within the Glendale area.
