Here’s what the most important contemporary art fair in Portugal looks like. Report and interviews from ArcoLisbona 2026

Ecco com’è la più importante fiera d’arte contemporanea del Portogallo. Reportage e interviste da ArcoLisbona 2026

ARCOlisboa, the leading contemporary art fair in Portugal, returns for its ninth edition from May 29 to 31, 2026, at the Cordoaria Nacional in Lisbon. The fair features 83 galleries from 17 countries, with a strong presence from Portugal, Spain, Latin America, and Europe, including two Italian galleries. It includes the General Program, Solo Projects, the Opening Lisboa section curated by Sofía Lanusse and Diogo Pinto, and a new section, Archipelago of Art Histories, curated by Cosmin Costinaș. Special programs include Millennium Art Talks, an editorial section, and a first-time International Program for Collectors, with seven prizes awarded.

The fair matters because it was born out of a crisis in Spain and Portugal in 2016, when galleries urged the director of ARCO Madrid to expand to Lisbon, and has since become a vital platform for the local art scene. Director Maribel López emphasizes its human scale, low costs for exhibitors and buyers, and strong relational component, which distinguish it from larger international fairs. The fair's focus on sustainability, collector engagement, and support for galleries and artists underscores its role in fostering the contemporary art ecosystem in Portugal and beyond.
