Jean-Michel Basquiat’s voice still echoes through a Toronto exhibition decades after his death

A new exhibition titled "Jean-Michel Basquiat / Editions" has opened at Taglialatella Galleries Toronto, showcasing limited-edition prints released by the artist's estate over the past 25 years. The show features works such as "50 Cent Piece" (1983), which explores themes of currency, power, and Black history through references to Marcus Garvey, the Federal Reserve, and François Duvalier. Gallery co-owner Alan Ganev discusses the enduring relevance of Basquiat's work and the gallery's expanded programming under new ownership.

The exhibition matters because it underscores how Basquiat's explorations of race, inequality, and social injustice remain central to contemporary public discourse, decades after his death in 1988. By presenting his editioned works in Toronto, the gallery connects new audiences with the artist's intellectual depth and political urgency, moving beyond his celebrity status to highlight his critical engagement with history and society. The show also reflects a broader trend of commercial galleries sustaining the legacy of iconic artists through estate-authorized editions.
