Here is the new home of the Historical Archive of the Venice Biennale. “We have the largest Contemporary Arts Archive in the world”

Ecco la nuova sede dell’Archivio Storico della Biennale di Venezia. “Abbiamo l’Archivio delle Arti Contemporanee più vasto al mondo”

The Historical Archive of the Venice Biennale is moving to a new home in the Magazzino del Ferro, a recovered industrial space in Venice. After two years of construction and an investment of 38 million euros, the 8,000-square-meter facility will be fully operational by February 2027. The archive, founded in 1895, will consolidate all functions of a contemporary arts archive under one roof, blending conservation and production in a reciprocal exchange between research and creation.

This relocation matters because it secures the future of what the Biennale calls the world's largest archive of contemporary arts, housing over a century of documentation from one of the most influential cultural institutions globally. The new space will enable expanded public access, improved preservation, and new synergies between archival research and artistic production, reinforcing Venice's role as a hub for contemporary art scholarship and curatorial practice.
