Salmon Arm Art Gallery challenges local artists to use natural materials for new exhibition

The Salmon Arm Art Gallery in British Columbia is presenting 'The Tangled Garden,' an open-entry members' exhibition running from June 20 to August 29, 2026. Local artists of all skill levels were challenged to create works exclusively using biodegradable and natural materials such as clay, wood, plant matter, organic pigments, and natural fibres. The exhibition coincides with the renaming of the Shuswap Community Foundations’ SAGA Endowment Fund in honor of the late Delores Mori, a dedicated gallery supporter, and includes replanting of the gallery gardens with drought-tolerant landscaping.

This exhibition matters because it pushes artists to reconsider their creative processes through the lens of sustainability and environmental impact. By requiring biodegradable materials, the gallery fosters innovative, eco-conscious art-making that aligns with broader cultural conversations about climate and waste. The event also strengthens community ties through collaborative projects and honors a local patron, demonstrating how small galleries can lead in both artistic experimentation and environmental stewardship.
