Fort Hunt gallery’s newest exhibit showcases Black artists

A new exhibition titled "Important, Inspiring & Joyful Artworks by Black Artists" opens at Nepenthe Gallery in Fort Hunt's Hollin Hall Shopping Center on June 4, running through July 15. The five-part show features works by renowned Black artists including Romare Bearden, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Faith Ringgold, alongside contemporary figures like Darlene Taylor and Victor Ekpuk. The opening reception includes a talk by Taylor, a multimedia artist and Howard University co-faculty advisor, and the gallery will host weekly talks by art historians, collectors, and artists throughout the run. Indigenous Australian artists are also represented in the exhibition.

This exhibition matters because it centers the contributions of Black artists—both historical and contemporary—in a local commercial gallery context, fostering community engagement through educational talks and discussions. By pairing celebrated names like Basquiat and Bearden with living artists and scholars, Nepenthe Gallery underscores the ongoing relevance and influence of Black artists in the art world, while also providing a platform for dialogue around legacy, identity, and creativity.
