South Arts' traveling show conjures lots of questions and thought at the LSU Museum of Art

The LSU Museum of Art is hosting the traveling exhibition '2025 South Arts Southern Prize & State Fellowships for Visual Arts,' opening June 4 and running through September 6. The show features works by artists from nine southern states, with Louisiana represented by Edgar Cano, whose painting 'Life is Beautiful' serves as the signature piece. Cano, a native of Veracruz, Mexico, now teaches at Northwestern Louisiana University and previously exhibited at Baton Rouge Gallery. The exhibition also includes works by artists such as Felicia Greenlee of South Carolina, whose wood collage 'Dejavu' reinterprets Grant Wood's 'American Gothic.'

This exhibition matters because it highlights the South Arts organization's ongoing commitment to supporting visual artists across the southern United States, providing a platform for regional talent to gain visibility in a museum setting. The show brings together diverse media—from painting and pottery to abstract sculpture and photo-realistic drawing—demonstrating the breadth of contemporary art practice in the South. For local audiences in Baton Rouge, it offers an opportunity to engage with both emerging and established artists from their own state and neighboring regions, fostering a deeper appreciation for the region's artistic contributions.
