Hefrani Barnes launches first solo exhibition at UniFiji

Young Fijian artist Hefrani Barnes has launched her first solo exhibition, titled "Emergent," at the University of Fiji's Suva Central Campus. The show features over 20 artworks addressing climate change, identity, health issues, and social challenges affecting Pacific communities. The event brought together students, artists, and invited guests, with guest speaker Letila Mitchell praising the university's support for emerging artists. Barnes, who was unable to attend, was represented by her mother, who noted the exhibition reflects the artist's personal journey living with epilepsy and explores themes of climate change, war, justice, and hope through diverse cultural materials.

This exhibition matters because it marks a significant milestone for a young Pacific artist using her platform to address urgent regional issues like climate change and social justice. The University of Fiji's commitment to becoming a leading contemporary Pacific arts and cultural space signals growing institutional support for local artists in the region. Barnes's work, which intertwines personal experience with broader societal challenges, highlights the role of art in preserving knowledge and fostering dialogue within Pacific communities.
