Young Fijian artist Hefrani Barnes has launched her first solo exhibition, titled "Emergent," at the University of Fiji's Suva Central Campus. The show features over 20 artworks addressing climate change, identity, health issues, and social challenges affecting Pacific communities, and was attended by students, artists, and invited guests. Guest speaker Letila Mitchell highlighted the role of artists in preserving knowledge and culture, while Barnes' mother spoke on behalf of the artist, noting that the exhibition reflects her daughter's personal journey living with epilepsy.
This exhibition matters because it marks a significant milestone for an emerging Pacific artist and underscores the University of Fiji's ambition to become a leading contemporary Pacific arts and cultural space. By centering urgent regional issues like climate change and social justice, Barnes' work demonstrates how art can serve as a platform for awareness, storytelling, and community dialogue in the Pacific Islands.
