Four Malaysian artists—Hasnul J. Saidon, Taufik Abdullah, Fauzin Mustafa, and Mohd Noor Mahmud—have reunited for the third edition of their exhibition series 'Empat Persepsi' (Four Perceptions), titled 'Four Perceptions: The Living Continuum,' at Ruang Teduh Gallery in Kuala Lumpur. The show, running until June 8, marks 37 years since their first collaborative exhibition in 1989 at Balai Seni Lukis Negara. It features works exploring nature, memory, spirituality, and material practice, and pays tribute to their late mentor Ismail Zain, a pioneer in Malaysian computer art.
The exhibition matters because it traces the artists' evolving relationship with art's purpose across three distinct career phases—from post-training idealism, through professional establishment, to full-time practice after retirement. The project challenges the commodification of art, emphasizing meaning and communication over commercial value. It also highlights the enduring power of friendship and shared inquiry in Malaysian contemporary art, offering a rare longitudinal view of artistic development over nearly four decades.
