Dirty carrots take over Yellowknife’s Gallery on 47th Street

Yellowknife's Gallery on 47th Street has opened a new exhibition titled "Not Just the Birds and the Bees," featuring photographs of suggestively shaped vegetables harvested by local gardeners. The idea originated with gardening collective member Lindsey Cymbalisty, who approached gallery owner Ainsley Dempsey with the concept. The images, printed on canvas and paper, include creative stagings and lighting that transform ordinary produce into playful, often humorous compositions. Patrons like Olivia Williams have already purchased works, such as Jen Potten's "Scarlet Nantes," to display in their homes.

The exhibition matters because it highlights the role of community-driven, lighthearted art in engaging local audiences and fostering a sense of shared creativity. By turning a common gardening observation into a curated show, the gallery demonstrates how accessible, relatable themes can draw new visitors and generate enthusiasm for the arts in a small northern city. It also underscores the importance of grassroots initiatives in sustaining vibrant local art scenes.
