Art Basel unveils Basel Exclusive and highlights for its flagship show

Art Basel has announced a new initiative called Basel Exclusive for its flagship fair in Basel, Switzerland, launching June 16, 2026. Participating galleries from the main Galleries sector will reserve at least one major work or entire presentation from all pre-fair previews and online sales, unveiling them publicly for the first time during the VIP opening's First Choice Preview hour. The fair also revealed the lineup for its Unlimited sector, curated for the first time by Ruba Katrib of MoMA PS1, featuring 59 major projects from 66 international galleries that engage with political, social, ecological, and spatial themes.

Basel Exclusive matters because it directly addresses the growing trend of pre-fair sales and online viewing rooms that have eroded the traditional live fair experience. By concentrating fresh, never-before-seen works at the opening moment, the initiative reasserts the primacy of in-person discovery and first access, strengthening the value proposition for collectors and galleries alike. The Unlimited sector's thematic focus on urgent contemporary issues, curated by a major museum figure, underscores Art Basel's continued role as a bellwether for ambitious, large-scale installation art and its commitment to presenting works that transcend conventional booth presentations.
