2026 Art Acquisitions

Andrew Monroe, a Fraser art teacher and MEA member, won Best in Show at the 62nd MEA/MAEA Art Acquisitions Purchase Exhibition for his charcoal drawing titled “Eyedentity.” The piece was inspired by a Social Security application and explores themes of assigned identities versus personal identity, including how individuals are viewed by others versus how they define themselves. The exhibition, co-sponsored by MEA and the Michigan Art Education Association, also awarded Honorable Mention, Juror’s Choice, and Purchase Awards.

This matters because the exhibition highlights the role of art educators in the visual arts community and supports the acquisition of artworks for public collections. Monroe’s winning piece engages with timely social questions about identity and categorization, reflecting how contemporary art can address personal and societal issues. The event also underscores the importance of regional art shows in fostering local artistic talent and providing recognition beyond major metropolitan art scenes.
