A room of their own

Mandapo, a new alternative art space, has opened in a hidden room behind an old staircase in Fort, Mumbai. Founded by artist Sujiet Podar, the space is located in Deval Chambers and aims to support emerging artists who struggle to find exhibition opportunities. The current exhibition, "The Echoes We Inherit," features works by artist Rounak Rai, with text by art writer Sushama Sabnis, and runs until 25 June.

Mandapo matters because it fills a critical gap in Mumbai's art ecosystem by providing a platform for mid-career and emerging artists who lack access to commercial galleries. Named after the Sanskrit word for a gathering hall, the space emphasizes mentorship, artistic process, and community dialogue over market-driven curation. It represents a growing trend of artist-run, non-commercial spaces that prioritize artistic integrity and accessibility in a city where real estate and gallery costs often exclude younger talent.
