Shuang Li shows how wild weather mirrors our fractured world

Shuang Li, a Chinese-born artist based in Berlin and Geneva, presents her first institutional solo show in Europe at Kunsthalle Basel. Titled "Alliance," the exhibition centers on a major new film installation that explores storm-chasing videos from social media, using tornadoes and extreme weather as metaphors for digital life, algorithmic systems, and contemporary existence shaped by climate instability, surveillance, and capitalist extraction.

The exhibition matters because it offers a psychologically immersive experience that blurs the line between observer and participant, reflecting how digital platforms mediate desire, identity, and connection. By drawing parallels between flattened physical landscapes and flattened media landscapes, Li critiques the fragmented, vortex-like nature of modern attention and information flows, avoiding dystopian clichés in favor of a tender, recalibrating perspective on how we live within chaotic systems.
