Government-funded mobile museum to tour national collections across England

The UK’s first permanent mobile museum will tour the country starting in 2027, bringing major works from the Government Art Collection (GAC) to new audiences. The initiative is backed by £800,000 each from the UK Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and the French arts charity Art Explora, founded by Frédéric Jousset. The mobile museum, designed by London-based Ab Rogers and built in Telford, will host three 12-week exhibitions per year, with GAC works featured in one annual exhibition alongside contributions from partners including the National Portrait Gallery, Leeds Art Gallery, Birmingham Museums Trust, and National Museums Liverpool.

This project matters because it represents a significant expansion of public access to national art collections, particularly for communities outside major urban centers. By bringing art directly to towns and regions across England, the mobile museum addresses longstanding disparities in cultural access and builds on Art Explora’s proven model in France, where similar mobile museums have successfully engaged diverse audiences over 15 years. The partnership also signals growing international collaboration in arts outreach and a shift toward more decentralized, community-focused cultural programming.
