‘It’s supposed to make you uncomfortable’: French artist JR on transforming Paris’ oldest bridge into a cave

French artist JR has transformed Paris's oldest bridge, the Pont Neuf, into a massive art installation called 'La Caverne,' an overground cave made from vast swathes of fabric printed to resemble Lutetian limestone. The immersive work, which opened 10 days late after storm damage, features a soundscape by Daft Punk's Thomas Bangalter and a subtle earthy scent. JR describes the piece as a journey into the unknown that evokes primal fears of darkness and entrapment, directly paying tribute to Christo and Jeanne-Claude's wrapping of the same bridge 40 years ago.

This installation matters because it continues a lineage of monumental public art that recontextualizes iconic urban landmarks, challenging visitors' perceptions of familiar spaces. By referencing the origins of art in prehistoric cave paintings and using the Pont Neuf—built from the same stone as Notre Dame and the Louvre—JR connects contemporary street art to deep cultural and geological history. The project also highlights the technical and logistical challenges of large-scale public art, as well as the enduring influence of Christo and Jeanne-Claude on a new generation of artists.
