‘Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind’ Redefines How Art Is Perceived

The Broad museum in Los Angeles has opened 'Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind,' the artist's first solo museum exhibition in Southern California, curated by Juliet Bingham. The show, which opened on May 11, features interactive works such as the iconic 1964 performance 'Cut Piece,' where Ono invited audiences to cut her clothing, as well as participatory installations like hammering nails into a board, drawing shadows, and stepping on artwork. Other highlights include 'Bag Piece' (1964), 'SKY TV' (1966), and 'Add Colour (Refugee Boat),' which address themes of identity, freedom, and immigration.

This exhibition matters because it redefines how art is perceived by challenging the traditional museum rule of 'do not touch,' emphasizing audience participation and the destruction of boundaries between artist and viewer. Ono's work, rooted in her wartime childhood and her activism alongside John Lennon, continues to resonate in contemporary discussions about peace, impermanence, and social engagement. By presenting Ono as a pioneering conceptual artist rather than merely a figure associated with The Beatles, the show solidifies her legacy as a countercultural revolutionary whose interactive art subverts conventional relationships between art and its audience.
