House Proposes Slashing Major Arts Education Grant

A House Appropriations subcommittee has approved a budget proposal that would eliminate the Department of Education's Assistance for Arts Education program, the only federal grant program dedicated to arts education. The proposal, advanced on June 9, would allocate $0 to the program, which was established in 2015 to fund arts education for disadvantaged students and children with disabilities, awarding millions in grants to schools and organizations serving families below the poverty line. Advocacy group Americans for the Arts is sounding the alarm, noting the program has supported teacher professional development, community partnerships, and outreach, and has previously received $36.5 million despite similar threats.

This matters because the proposed cut is part of a broader effort by the Trump Administration to dismantle the Department of Education, with an overall 10% reduction of $8 billion. The move follows a separate proposal to cut funding for the National Endowment for the Arts and Humanities for the second consecutive year. If enacted, the elimination would strip critical arts education resources from low-income communities and students with disabilities, potentially widening educational inequities. The Senate will draft its own budget proposals before a final bill is agreed upon, leaving the outcome uncertain but the threat significant for arts advocates nationwide.
