Locals will get free admission to Memphis Art Museum thanks to anonymous donor

The Memphis Art Museum, set to open December 6 in Downtown Memphis, will offer free admission to Shelby County residents forever, thanks to an anonymous donor. The museum, located at 55 South Front Street, will replace the Brooks Museum of Art in Overton Park, offering 50% more gallery space and the ability to host at least 15 exhibitions at a time, up from four.

This move makes art accessible to the local community regardless of financial barriers, reinforcing the museum's mission as a public institution built for and by Memphis. The anonymous donation ensures long-term free access, which could increase visitation and community engagement, setting a precedent for other museums considering similar policies.
