In Genoa, the Galleria Nazionale della Liguria reopens with an unprecedented layout showcasing new acquisitions and donations

A Genova la Galleria Nazionale della Liguria riapre con allestimento inedito che mette in mostra nuove acquisizioni e donazioni

The Galleria Nazionale della Liguria in Genoa has reopened at its historic Palazzo Spinola di Pellicceria location with a completely redesigned permanent exhibition and expanded visitor route, following a year of modernization work on the building's upper floors. The museum, which has been part of the Musei Nazionali di Genova brand since 2022, is preparing to move to Palazzo Raggio—a 16th-century building purchased by the Ministry of Culture for €4 million in 2025—where it will have more space to display works from storage. The reopening coincides with the end of Alessandra Guerrini's tenure as director of the Musei Nazionali di Genova and showcases recent acquisitions and donations that have enriched the collection.

This reopening matters because it highlights a significant institutional investment in Genoa's cultural heritage, both through the acquisition of a new venue and through a robust state-funded acquisitions policy that has brought major works into the public collection. The new display spans from the Middle Ages to the mid-20th century, featuring recent purchases such as Donato de' Bardi's "Presentazione di Gesù al Tempio" (c. 1430), Frans Floris's "Il trionfo delle virtù sui mali della guerra" (c. 1560), Guido Reni's "Giuditta con la testa di Oloferne" (c. 1638–1639), and Giacomo Boselli's "Trionfo di Giano" (1787). The redesigned spaces, curated by Officine delle Idee, balance the atmosphere of the historic noble residence with a narrative that emphasizes both local artistic traditions and international exchanges across centuries.
