The Ukiyoe Immersive Art Museum GINZA will open in Tokyo's Ginza district in Spring 2027, transforming a successful traveling exhibition series into a permanent digital art museum. The exhibitions, held in nine cities worldwide, attracted over 500,000 visitors and featured immersive 3D video projections of works by renowned ukiyo-e artists including Hokusai, Kuniyoshi, Hiroshige, Utamaro, Sharaku, and Kunisada. The museum will offer eight conceptual 3D video areas using cutting-edge 3DCG animation and projection mapping based on over 300 ukiyo-e works, alongside original Edo-period prints and multilingual explanations.
The opening marks a significant milestone for immersive digital art experiences focused on traditional Japanese culture, establishing a permanent hub in one of Tokyo's most prestigious districts. By combining advanced technology with historical ukiyo-e masterpieces, the museum aims to make Japanese cultural heritage accessible to international tourists and global audiences, potentially setting a new standard for how traditional art forms are presented in the digital age. The project is planned and produced by HITOHATA and TV Aichi, with ukiyo-e and Edo culture supervision by Masumi Horiguchi.
