À Nice, le musée Matisse met en dialogue le maître avec Yves Saint Laurent

The Musée Matisse in Nice and the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Paris are co-organizing an exhibition titled "Le beau, la mode et le bonheur" from June 17 to September 28, 2026, bringing together 160 works by Henri Matisse and Yves Saint Laurent. The show juxtaposes Matisse's paintings, drawings, and archives with Saint Laurent's sketches, garments, and accessories, exploring their shared fascination with color, ornament, and textile. Curated by Serena Bucalo-Mussely and Aymeric Jeudy, the exhibition is staged in seven chapters and includes loans from the Matisse museum, the Fondation Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint Laurent, and international lenders.

This exhibition matters because it stages a direct dialogue between two towering figures of 20th-century art and fashion, revealing how Matisse's bold use of color and pattern directly influenced Saint Laurent's collections from the 1980s and 1990s. By highlighting Matisse's early interest in clothing and fabric—evident in works like "La Blouse roumaine"—and Saint Laurent's lifelong engagement with visual art, the show underscores the deep, reciprocal relationship between fine art and fashion. It also positions Nice as a cultural destination for a major summer blockbuster, drawing attention to the region's art heritage.
