PENITENT: Art Talk and Exhibit

Artist-in-residence Camilla Taylor will present "PENITENT: Art Talk and Exhibit" at Surel's Place in Garden City, Idaho, on July 11, 2026. The talk and exhibition focus on a series of drawings, prints, and sculptures referencing the myth of St. Mary of Egypt, exploring hair as a symbol of the body, femininity, and quasi-magical qualities. Taylor's recent work has been deeply affected by the loss of their Altadena home and studio in the 2025 Eaton Fire, which destroyed all their artwork and possessions. They previously curated "My House Burned Down" at Track 16 Gallery in Downtown LA and held a solo exhibition "Unkindness" at Track 16 Gallery in East Hollywood, which dealt with atheist mysticism and included a sculpture that survived the fire.

This event matters because it highlights how a catastrophic personal loss—the Eaton Fire—has fundamentally transformed Taylor's artistic practice, making their work "more fragile and more precious." Taylor's use of hair as a recurring motif connects deeply personal themes of corporeality, vulnerability, and endurance with broader cultural and mythological references. The talk also underscores the resilience of artists in the face of climate-related disasters and the role of community art spaces like Surel's Place in supporting artists' recovery and creative evolution. Taylor's recent Pollock-Krasner Artist Fellowship and residencies further affirm their growing significance in contemporary art.
