Bavaria returns looted art painting

Bayern gibt Raubkunst-Gemälde zurück

Bavaria has returned a painting by Friedrich von Amerling, titled "Bildnis eines jungen Mannes", to the heirs of Jewish antiquarian and art dealer Jacques Rosenthal and his wife Emma. The work was looted by the Nazis; the Rosenthals were forced to sell their business and household goods under duress, and the painting was acquired by the Munich Pinakotheken through a trade for a fraction of its value. The restitution follows intensive provenance research by the Bavarian State Painting Collections.

This restitution matters because Bavaria has long faced criticism for its handling of Nazi-looted art, including accusations of opacity and delays in reviewing claims. The return marks a significant step in acknowledging past injustices and signals a shift toward more transparent and proactive restitution policies, especially after the departure of former director Bernhard Maaz amid controversy.
