Artist Julian Charrière, musician Thomas Bangalter (formerly of Daft Punk), and DJ Rampa have conceived a warehouse-style rave called Warehouse Artefacts, set to take place on 20 June in Hall 1.1 South of the Messe Basel site during Art Basel. The event will open at 11am as an installation for Art Basel ticket holders, featuring flickering lights, fog, and sounds derived from house music components, including a stretched bass drum from a Roland TR-808. At the center of the space, a sealed glass monolith will contain an analogue tape machine playing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights read by Eleanor Roosevelt. At 6pm, the space transforms into a rave led by Rampa and a special guest, with all 3,400 tickets sold out, followed by an after-party at Nordstern Basel.
The project matters because it blurs the boundaries between installation, theatre, party, and social experiment, pairing the foundational principles of underground dance music with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to reflect on how meaning and community are produced during moments of crisis. Presented by Nordstern Basel in cooperation with Art Basel and Fondation Beyeler, the event represents a significant fusion of contemporary art, music, and political commentary within the context of one of the world's most prominent art fairs, offering a unique and immersive experience that challenges traditional art fair programming.
