Mumbai will host the first exhibition of artist Tom Vattakuzhy's work in the city, titled 'Where Words End,' at the Institute of Contemporary Indian Art (ICIA) from May 3–17, 2026. The exhibition presents a series of his "story paintings," which explore experiences that elude verbal expression, moving beyond his illustrative background to create ambiguous, emotionally resonant works.
The exhibition is significant as it introduces Vattakuzhy's mature practice to a major Indian art center, highlighting a shift in contemporary painting toward non-narrative, experiential engagement. It underscores the ongoing dialogue about painting's unique capacity to communicate where language fails, positioning the artist within important currents of Indian art and connecting his work to broader themes of memory, migration, and social marginalization.
