Katherine El-Salahi, an anti-apartheid activist, anthropologist, and publisher, has died at age 81. Born Katherine Levine, she studied at Cambridge and SOAS before joining the clandestine group London Recruits in 1970, carrying out leaflet bomb propaganda and running guns into South Africa. She later became instrumental in the career of her husband, Sudanese painter Ibrahim El-Salahi, organizing his landmark 2013 retrospective at Tate Modern, building his archive, and securing gallery representation with Vigo Gallery.

George Herms, Titan of West Coast Assemblage, Dies at 90

George Herms, a pioneering figure in the West Coast Assemblage movement, died on April 24 at age 90. Known for transforming found materials, rusted metal, and debris into poetic sculptures and collages, Herms emerged from the Beat scene in Topanga Canyon and was influenced by artist Wallace Berman. Ittai Gradel, Whistleblower in British Museum Gem Theft, Dies at 61

Ittai Gradel, the Israel-born Danish gem expert who alerted the British Museum to the theft of thousands of antiquities from its collection after discovering them for sale on eBay, died on April 28 of renal cancer at age 61. Days before his death, British Museum officials visited him in hospice and presented him with a rarely awarded medal for his service. Gradel first warned deputy director Jonathan Williams in 2021 that artifacts were being sold online, identified veteran curator Peter Higgs as the culprit, and provided detailed evidence. After the museum failed to act, Gradel contacted then-director Hartwig Fischer; two years later, Higgs was fired, and Fischer and Williams left the institution amid the scandal.

Ittai Gradel, a Danish classical gems specialist, has died at age 61. His investigations revealed that hundreds of objects had been stolen from the British Museum, leading to the resignation of director Hartwig Fischer in 2023. Gradel first alerted the museum in 2021 after finding proof that precious objects were being sold on eBay, naming senior curator Peter Higgs as the suspected seller. After initial concerns were ignored, Gradel wrote again in 2022, eventually prompting a police investigation. Higgs was dismissed in July 2023, and Fischer resigned the following month. Of the 2,000 items affected, 626 have been recovered, many bought in good faith by Gradel and returned. Earlier this month, Gradel received a special British Museum award from current director Nicholas Cullinan.
