Art Basel Qatar Taps Former Mathaf Director Wassan Al-Khudhairi to Shape 2027 Fair

Art Basel has appointed Iraqi curator Wassan Al-Khudhairi as artistic director for the 2027 edition of Art Basel Qatar, succeeding Egyptian artist Wael Shawky who shaped the inaugural edition. The fair will take place January 28–30, 2027, with preview days on January 26–27, at Doha Design District and M7 in Msheireb Downtown Doha. Al-Khudhairi, former founding director of Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, brings deep ties to Qatar and international curatorial experience from biennials including Gwangju and the Asian Art Biennial.

Lorenzo Balbi, currently director of MAMbo in Bologna, has been appointed as the new director of the Musei di Verona, a civic museum network that includes the Arena di Verona, Casa di Giulietta, Museo Archeologico al Teatro Romano, Museo Civico di Storia naturale, Museo degli Affreschi di G. B. Cavalcaselle, Museo di Castelvecchio, Museo Lapidario Maffeiano, and Galleria d’Arte Moderna Achille Forti. He will take office in September 2026, selected for his strategic vision to revitalize the system as a hub for cultural production, civic participation, and international dialogue.

Dallas Contemporary Appoints Interim Director & New Strategic Advisor

Dallas Contemporary has appointed John McBride as Interim Director and Jeremy Strick as Strategic Advisor. McBride, formerly Deputy Director of the Nasher Sculpture Center, will oversee daily operations, programming, and financial stewardship during a multiyear planning period. Strick, former Director of the Nasher and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, will advise on mission, governance, and curatorial programming. The appointments follow recent leadership turnover, including the departure of Executive Director Lucia Simek in December 2025.

Ronald Rose-Antoinette is the new Max Stern Curator at the Ellen Art Gallery

Ronald Rose-Antoinette has been appointed the new Max Stern Curator at Concordia University’s Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery. A Concordia graduate with a BFA, MA in film studies, and PhD in humanities, Rose-Antoinette has over 20 years of experience studying, working, and collaborating at the university. His role includes curating the SIGHTINGS exhibition series, developing public programming, and overseeing the gallery’s permanent collection of more than 1,800 works, primarily by Canadian artists. He describes his return as a "homecoming" and emphasizes a curatorial vision focused on decolonial practices, cross-cultural work, and intersectional approaches.
