The Philadelphia Museum of Art has reversed its controversial rebrand, announced just four months ago, and will return to its original name. The institution will, however, retain the new griffin logo and brand identity introduced in October. The decision followed a unanimous vote by the board of trustees, based on recommendations from a task force that surveyed staff, trustees, members, and the public.
Smithsonian Institution Secretary Lonnie G. Bunch III announced an internal review of the museum network's programming in response to an executive order from the Trump administration calling for a review of its content. In a letter to staff, Bunch stated the institution would conduct its own review to ensure programming is nonpartisan and factual, while asserting the Smithsonian's independence from the White House. This follows a March executive order claiming the Smithsonian had adopted a divisive, race-centered ideology, and earlier pressure to end DEI initiatives, which the Smithsonian had already closed in January. Bunch had lunch with President Trump after the White House released a list of artworks it denounced, and the administration previously claimed to have fired National Portrait Gallery director Kim Sajet over DEI support, though she later resigned.
The Teiger Foundation, a US-based nonprofit supporting art curators, has announced its 2025 grantees, awarding a total of $7 million to 85 curators at institutions across the country. This nearly doubles last year’s grants as the foundation transitions to a biennial model, with individual grants ranging from $50,000 to $150,000 for exhibitions, research, touring shows, and three years of programming. Notable projects include a major survey of the late artist L.V. Hull organized by curators Ryan N. Dennis, Annalise Flynn, and Yaphet Smith, and a Theresa Hak Kyung Cha retrospective curated by Victoria Sung and Tausif Noor.
Historic preservation groups, led by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, have formally requested a pause on construction of President Donald Trump's new ballroom at the White House. Demolition began on the East Wing to make way for a 55,000-square-foot addition, which the Trust argues would overwhelm the White House's classical design and disrupt its historic fabric. The letter, sent to the National Capital Planning Commission, National Park Service, and Commission of Fine Arts, urges a halt until legally required public reviews occur. The Society of Architectural Historians and the American Institute of Architects have also voiced concerns, though none of these groups hold statutory authority to stop construction.
